The back porch got a little love with the removal of a rotted 2-story staircase and new railings. Other back yard improvements included: several truck loads of fill to correct drainage and raise a low spot, a solid bi-directional porch with handrails to match the upper porch, and a large concrete patio to connect the drive with the porch and the back yard.
The Van Deusen house was a 111 year old, 2-story 2-unit farm house in Madison's wonderful, eclectic Bay Creek neighborhood. The City required the house be returned to a single family house, so correcting the mechanicals by re-wiring, replumbing, insulating and replacing the heating was only the beginning. We had to rethink the entire floor plan and create an inviting, smart interior. This was an extensive renovation that touched every wall, every surface of the home.

Removing the drop ceiling, chimney and walls allowed us to bring an open concept floor plan to life. An original door on sliding barn door hardware was a perfect solution to make sure this closet door didn't interrupt the flow of traffic. The maple floors are original!
2nd floor: the removal of the brick chimney, the kitchen and a couple of closets allowed us to put a hallway down the center of the 2nd floor to create 4 bedrooms and a full bath. To complete this dramatic change, all trim was reproduced to match the original.
